Updated: SCOM 2016 & 2012 R2 Prerequisites Script

Last year when I was starting work on my new Getting Started with Operations Manager book, I needed a PowerShell script that would help me deploy the SCOM 2016 and 2012 R2 prerequisites without fail every time.

The script was a derivative of an earlier SCOM 2012 SP1 script that I published a few years back and it worked fine up until the download link for the ReportViewer prerequisite changed to support Windows Server 2016. I had it on my to-do list to update this script to reflect the new download link but before I got around to it, I noticed that my good friend (and the tallest Dutch guy I know) Oskar Landman had taken my original script and added his scripting magic to it!

Oskar's updated script now has interactive prompts to check which version of SCOM you're installing and whether or not you are deploying the Web Console role (which requires the most prerequisites) - awesome!

Taking your inputs from those prompts, it will then go and download the SQLSysClrTypes and ReportViewer prerequisites to a folder of your choice, install them and then deploy all required roles and features based on your input - nice!

You can review Oskar's original blog post about his work on this script here.

The updated script can be downloaded from my GitHub repo here:

Useful Recent CloudOS News and Blogs

Well, after a few weeks away from work on vacation, I've finally managed to filter through the majority of my unread emails and Twitter feeds. What I've come across from browsing through just a few short weeks of them is a number of very useful and cool updates and community offerings for System Center 2012 R2, Windows Azure Pack, Azure and Windows Server 2012 R2.

I've broken my favourites down into categories to make things easier to reference and if you haven't seen some of these posts yet and are working with CloudOS products, then I'd strongly advise you to check them out:

SCOM

Jalasoft – Xian SNMP Device Simulator V5

SCOM 2012 – Display & Download MPs Using PowerShell Widgets

VMM

Download the VMM Network Builder

Blog Series: Bare Metal Post-Deployment

So that's it in a nutshell for now - and although it's not a comprehensive list of everything that's been happening over the past month or so, there's still a lot of very impressive community content around CloudOS.

Enjoy!

E-Book Gallery for Microsoft Technologies - Your One Stop Shop!

I've just seen a tweet from Microsoft's Yung Chou about a relatively unknown TechNet Wiki page titled the 'E-Book Gallery for Microsoft Technologies'.

This Wiki page has easily over 100 different E-Books covering technologies such as Lync, SharePoint, SQL, System Center, Visual Studio, Azure (the list goes on and on) and there's also a diverse number of e-books in languages other than English.

The best thing about all these e-books is of course that they're all FREE!

I highly recommend you check out this excellent resource and get the downloads going for as many of them as you need to keep in touch with the growing number of different technologies that Microsoft has to offer.

Check out the Wiki here:

Available Now - Mastering Windows Server 2012 R2

Just before the Christmas break, it was a nice surprise to see the postman had delivered a package that essentially represented the best part of 12 months of hard work for me - mostly working into the early hours of the morning after the day job finished.

This delivery was none other than the 'dead tree' format of my new book...

Late last year and not too long after our 'Mastering System Center 2012 - Operations Manager' book hit the shelves, I was given the opportunity to head up an excellent team of authors to work on a book that would cover the original release of Windows Server 2012. The book was essentially an update to the excellent 'Mastering Windows Server 2008 R2' book that was led by well known author and speaker Mark Minasi with co-authors like Aidan Finn working their magic throughout. (No pressure on us then!)

This updated Windows Server 2012 book was due to hit the shelves by March/April but when Microsoft announced the upcoming Windows Server 2012 R2 release (codenamed Windows Blue), we just knew we had to re-do our work on the book to keep it consistent and current. What we didn't realise is the sheer volume of extra work that the new R2 release had landed us with and suckers like me who had 8 chapters to work on pretty much had to do a re-write of everything - not to mention labs being rebuilt/upgraded too!

Reading through the full book now though, I can see that all the effort was worth it and I want to say a big thanks to all involved in bringing this to market. There's a great team of authors and editors behind it and if you want to ramp up on your Windows Server 2012 R2 knowledge, then this is a great place to start.

Depending on your country and preference, you can get your hands on a paperback copy of it from the links below:

Hope you enjoy it!

Available Now on Pre-Order: Mastering Windows Server 2012 R2

If you've been hiding under a rock for the last few months, then you might not be aware that Microsoft have just recently announced the General Availability of Windows Server 2012 R2. The amount of new feature enhancements and additions that come with this release when compared to its  'not-so-long-ago released' predecessor (Windows Server 2012) are unreal.

Late last year and not too long after our 'Mastering System Center 2012 - Operations Manager' book hit the shelves, I was given the opportunity to head up an excellent team of authors to work on a book that would cover the original release of Windows Server 2012. Anyway, all that madness is behind us now and the book is available for pre-order on all the usual channels with discounts up to 33% knocked off the RRP on Amazon.

If you want to learn how to master Windows Server 2012 R2, then this is the book for you and you can get it here:

Download a Free White paper on Hybrid Cloud with NVGRE (WSSC 2012 R2)

A new white paper has just been made available by some MVP friends of mine on the complex topic of Hybrid Cloud NVGRE using Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2.

The whitepaper is available as a free download and was authored by System Center Cloud and Datacenter MVP's - Kristian Nese and Flemming Riis.

The technical reviewers of the paper included two other System Center Cloud and Datacenter MVP's -  Stanislav Zhelyazkov and Daniel Neumann. It also contained input from the Microsoft product group aligned directly with virtual networking and WSSC 2012 R2 so you know the technical content is going to be of a very high standard.

Check out Kristian's blog post from the link below to get your hands on the white paper today:

Want to learn how to Manage Windows Server 2012 NVGRE with PowerShell?

If the answer is Yes to the title of this post, then make sure that you attend this afternoon's (Irish time) MVP Pro Speaker Series session on the topic by System Center MVP - Damian Flynn. Outside of Microsoft, Damian is one of a small number of people on the planet that actually understand this stuff and that can explain it in easy-to-learn steps.

I've just been speaking to Damian about this session and he's told me that it's going to be a Level 300 bordering on Level 400 type session so not for the faint hearted but definitely no marketing fluff will be presented here.

Here's an excerpt from Damian's own blog post on the session:

If you are still wrapping your head around the NVGRE technology which Microsoft has introduced in Windows 2012, and want to get down and dirty into how this stuff actually ticks, then I have some great news for you.

Following the recent presentation and whitepapers which were just published a few weeks ago, as we
“Unravelling the Network”, explaining at a higher level just how these technologies play together to create a seamless implementation for software defined networking, we are now going to deep dive.

In association with the Microsoft MVP Pro Speaker series, on Tuesday July 9th at 8am EST PST (4pm GMT) I will present a 1 hour session demonstrating what needs to happen on the Hosts and VMs to bring NVGRE to life, using nothing but PowerShell.

This presentation is targeted as the Level 300/400 so I am going to really recommend that you take an hour upfront and watch the presentation with
Savision if you have not yet had the opportunity.

You can join the live meeting here:

https://join.microsoft.com/meet/karrieo/5KH311B3

If you're reading this and think it's too late to join up or you're otherwise engaged, then keep an eye out for the recording and slides that will be put up on the Microsoft Partner and Customer Solutions blog here:

Microsoft Are Now Gartner Magic Quadrant Leaders For x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure

Reading the Microsoft In The Cloud blog yesterday, I noticed that Microsoft have smashed into the leaders quadrant of the Gartner Magic Quadrant report on x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant is an objective third party view on how the different technology players in each specific market are performing. As a Microsoft consultant pitching System Center and Hyper-V, I get asked on a regular basis by our customers - particularly at 'C Level' (i.e. CEO, CIO, CTO etc.) about where Microsoft are at in terms of Gartner. In the past I'd have to tell them that competitors such as VMware were positioned as 'Leaders' and Microsoft were trailing around in the 'Challengers' spot.

Not any more though...

As we can see from the graphic above, since June of this year (2013) Microsoft are now in the 'Leaders' quadrant along with VMware. From the graphic we can see that there's still a gap between the two players but with everything coming in the new Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2 releases, plus the new Windows Azure Pack (formerly Project Katal), I'm pretty confident that that gap will be closed towards the end of the year.

If you're a consultant or engineer in the Microsoft space, then this should be music to your ears, if you're in the VMware space however, then fear not, you can become a superhero for your organization starting from today by clicking the link below ;)

TechEd North America 2013 Kicks Off Announcing Heaps of New MSFT Releases

Microsoft's flagship conference - TechEd 2013 - is kicking off today (June 3rd) in New Orleans. The Day 1 keynote speech by Microsoft's Brad Anderson is of particular interest due to the media storm that has been generated around the so-called Windows 'Blue' wave of updates across their client and server stack.

Here's a high-level summary of the keynote and announcements that have been made:

Windows 8.1

Microsoft announced the newest release of their client Operating System - called Windows 8.1. This release will be made available as a free upgrade to existing Windows 8 customers. The preview bits will be made available on June 26th and the final release will hit the shelves before the year is out.

The following Windows 8.1 features have been demonstrated or mentioned during the keynote:

  • Enhanced tile customization
  • Group policy management of the Start Screen
  • A new feature for Windows 8.1 and PowerPoint called Mirrorcast allows Windows 8.1 devices to easily pair with compatible streamless devices to allow seamless wireless presenting.
  • Workplace Join is a new feature that allows you to easily connect your non-domain joined device to the workplace and to just as easily remove all the customization and management of that device once you're finished working for the day.
  • Apps can be managed from the cloud with Windows Intune.

Windows Server 2012 R2

As the name suggests, Windows Server 2012 now has an updated release too. Here's what's been announced for it:
  • Work Folders is a new feature that should most likely see usage of applications such as Dropbox getting less and less use in the enterprise.
  • Active Directory on-premise now works with Azure Active Directory.
  • Storage spaces are taken to the next level with enhanced performance and scalability. With Storage Tiering, you'll get approx. a 16x improvement on Windows Server 2012 RTM.
  • Inbox VPN gateway for Network Virtualization

Hyper-V

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V has a number of significant enhancements, some of which are:

(Update - some of the info below has been added as features get mentioned in the breakout sessions)
  • Using DeDup storage with virtual machines can now enhance the performance of the virtual machines by intelligently caching the storage.
  • Live Migration compression now means that your virtual machines will migrate between hosts far quicker than with Windows Server 2012 RTM.
  • Using RDMA with Live Migration will enhance the live migration of your VM's even quicker than with the compression option.
  • Hyper-V replica can be managed across sites and with greater scale using the Hyper-V Recovery Manager feature of Windows Azure.
  • Remote Access via VMBus - this is seriously cool. It basically means we now get similar functionality to the HP ILO or Dell DRAC features with our virtual machines in Hyper-V.
  • Online grow and shrink of virtual hard disks to manage your virtual disk space allocations on the fly.
  • Replication of virtual machines can now be extended to a third site (as opposed to the two site limit in Windows Server 2012 RTM)

Windows Azure

Azure retains it original name but a plethora of new features have been added:

(Update - some of the info below has been added as features get mentioned in the breakout sessions)
  • Per minute billing
  • No charge for stopped virtual machines
  • Special rate for MSDN subscribers making dev/test scenarios much more feasible.
  • Uses the same Hyper-V hypervisor as in Windows Server 2012.
  • We can now see how much credit we've used directly inside the portal making it easier to keep the credit card bills down!
  • Azure Active Directory now works with Windows Server 2012 on-premise Active Directory
  • The Windows Azure Pack (WAP) has been announced. This is the new name for the Windows Azure Services for Windows Server (aka project Katal). Good whitepaper on this here (http://t.co/ahLGIn2zOQ)
  • Hyper-V Recovery Manager delivers enterprise level replication of your virtual machines between sites.

System Center 2012 R2

Like Windows Server, System Center 2012 now gets an 'R2' release. The only mention in the keynote of System Center was around Intune integrating with on-premise ConfigMgr to manage Windows 8.1 apps but this integration is nothing new. Hopefully as the week goes on, we'll get some additional feature updates on what's new.

(Update - some of the info below has been added as features get mentioned in the breakout sessions)
  • Built-in service template for Windows Server 2012 R2 Gateway functionality as part of SCVMM 2012 R2.
  • New Java Application Performance Monitoring (APM) functionality in SCOM 2012 R2

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM)

Here's what's coming for all you developers out there:
  • Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Visual Studio are getting new releases this coming year.
  • Microsoft has acquired a company called 'InRelease' that delivers integrated release management into TFS.
  • Enhanced load-test service will be delivered from the cloud.

SQL 2014

SQL has been given a new release too and we should see some preview releases towards the end of the year. Here's some of the new features:
  • New enterprise-level data insights with Excel project GeoFlow
  • Data Explorer helps to make use of big-data and translate it into tangible business use
  • Transaction processing now comes 'in-memory'

Summary

That just about wraps up all I could gather from the keynote without reviewing the recording again later but I think it'll give people the general feel of what's been announced.

You can check out the keynote video and a few selected live sessions at TechEd NA on Microsoft's Channel 9 website here: http://channel9.msdn.com/

Also, if you're looking for up-to-the-minute updates from some of the best sessions on the 'Modern Datacenter' track over there, then check out Aidan Finn's blog here: http://www.aidanfinn.com/

I think it's fair to say now that if you're working in the IT space, there's some pretty exciting times ahead for us :)
